What and Who is Native Santa Cruz

Native Santa Cruz
As the name suggests, this site is all about Santa Cruz, all of Santa Cruz county. Your host and photographer at nativesantacruz.org is of course a life long resident of Santa Cruz, but more about me in a bit. In terms of size, Santa Cruz is the second smallest county in California. However, in terms of beauty and spirit, Santa Cruz county is rich and vibrant in ways that no other locale in California can match. From the mountain summits to the tourist beaches, from the agriculture fields to the rugged coast, Santa Cruz has amazing beauty that is unmatched anywhere else. Physical beauty aside, Santa Cruz also has a unique spirit that radiates through everyday life. Through my camera lens, I attempt to capture both that uncommon beauty and the unique Santa Cruz spirit that makes me proud to call myself a native of Santa Cruz.

From an early age, I’ve been interested in cameras and photography and played with many inexpensive cameras as a child. While in my teens, I purchased my first real camera, a Canon FTb. The FTb was a fully manual SLR that allowed me to learn photography starting with the very basics. This was of course in the old film days, where every single picture taken had an associated film and developing cost. I’m thankful for the way I learned photography, lots of trial and error while trying to make every squeeze of the shutter count. Photography was always just a hobby for for me and over time, life’s other activities pushed the camera aside. I never transitioned to the digital age of photography and like the old photos and slides I have stashed away in boxes, my passion for photography slowly faded away…

Then came my first iPhone, the 4s. The tiny camera with the awesome quality in the 4s re-awakened my passion for photography and quickly lead me to purchasing my first digital SLR camera, a Nikon 5100. I have no idea where my newly re-found joy of photography or this blog and website will take me, but I hope you will follow along with me on the journey.

  1. I enjoyed learning more about you. My folks were into photography and at one point mom was developing pictures in our front bathroom! It didn’t smell so good, but I look back now and see the pleasure they got from taking photos. Your love of the art really comes through! Thanks for sharing with us.

  2. Isn’t it amazing what will open our eyes to the world around us. A phone re-awakens the passion of your heart for photography. I love it. Thank you for taking the time to stop by my blog and for the like. Here’s to the beauty and hope found in every sunrise and sunset!
